Dispelling the muzzle myth
Dogs Trust are pro-muzzle and recommend muzzle training for every dog. Why? Because it is fun to train and you never know when you might need it.
A dog may need to be muzzled for a variety of reasons – perhaps it is to meet the new requirements, as brought in by the Government on 31 December 2023, where all American Bully XL dogs must be kept on a lead and muzzled in public. However, it could also be to avoid a dog eating things off the floor when out for a walk, to help prepare them for a visit to the vet, or because they could be reactive and anxious around other dogs. Quite simply, a muzzle can be for any dog, any size, any breed.

Being able to comfortably wear a muzzle is a valuable skill for a dog and the length of time it takes for them to master this can vary. With this in mind, Dogs Trust offer a range of training, from webinars to 1-2-1 sessions, they have expert trainers on hand to answer your questions. To find out more or to book a place, please go to Muzzle Training on the Dogs Trust website.
Ensuring your dog is insured
From 1 February 2024, it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales if you do not have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog. As part of this, you must also have third-party liability insurance against your dog possibly injuring others.
The Dogs Trust Companion Club offers third-party insurance to all dog owners, including those who have banned breeds and are registered in the Index of Exempted Dogs.
However, there are also other benefits to signing up to the Companion Club – including unlimited access to VetfoneTM, a 24-hour emergency advice service from veterinary professionals, as well as a 25% discount on Dogs Trust behaviour and training programmes.
To find out more, go to their Companion Club information on the Dogs Trust website.
