It’s National Dog Biscuit Day on February 23rd. Woof woof and hooray! It’s a chance to spoil our furry friends in a pawsome way!

Did you know dog biscuits have a lineage older than your grandma’s recipe box? Legend has it, the first batch was a human culinary misstep, deemed “woof!” by discerning canine taste buds. And doggie treats grew in popularity to what they are today.

Yesteryear they used to put ground-up hooves and horns into the mix. These ingredients aren’t found in commercially available dog treats, instead they use higher quality protein sources like meat, poultry, or fish. Earning us slobbery kisses from snobbery pups everywhere!

When you indulge your pup in delicious doggy treats remember to not compromise their pearly whites! In the spirit of Pet Dental Health month offer your dog crunchy veggies or fruits (in moderation) alongside treats to encourage natural teeth cleaning.

Try our peanut butter recipe in homage to peanut butter day. Please note: xylitol, a sugar substitute, is extremely toxic for dogs and can sometimes be found in peanut butter, only use unsalted, no sugar, and no sugar replacement peanut butter in this doggie recipe.

Homemade Peanut Butter Dog Biscuits

Ingredients:

– 2 cups whole wheat flour

– 1/2 cup rolled oats

– 1/3 cup creamy peanut butter (unsalted, no added sugar, and no xylitol)

– 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce

– 1/4 cup water

Method:

1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the whole wheat flour and rolled oats.

3. In a separate bowl, mix the peanut butter, applesauce, and water until well combined.

4. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a bit more water.

5. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.

6. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes, or simply slice the dough into squares or rectangles.

7. Place the biscuits on the prepared baking sheet and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and firm to the touch.

8. Allow the biscuits to cool completely before serving them to your pup.

Store the leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh. And use them to treat and train your dog with kindness.
