We are so pleased to be joined by the super talented Dog Behaviourist Adem Fehmi in our Behaviour Zone – A safe space to come and ask for advice and learn ways on recognising different behaviours in a dog!

Adem has been training and working with dogs for over 14 years. His interest and fascination with dogs started as a young child, studying, observing, working and living with these amazing creatures.

You might be lucky enough to catch Adem’s demonstration on How to Train Your Dog Not to Jump Up. Did you know that most dogs jump up to get our attention? According to Adem, your pup may be attempting to let you know that they’re worried about something, but they’re also likely to jump up when they’re excited to see you!

Here are 3 easy steps Adem shares to correct this behaviour:

1. A tray of licky treats.

Get your pooch to associate the front door with treats on the floor.

2. Distract – don’t take the tray away.

As you are about to open the front door, throw a treat before you take the tray away. Distract your pooch with something else. Don’t add to your pup’s anxiety by taking the tray away. Distract with kindness and throw the treat away from the door.

3. Open the door and welcome your friend.

Your dog will be nose down and tail wagging instead of jumping up. Make sure you imprint this new behaviour through repetition!
