What is FRESH dog food?
Freshly prepared meals for dogs are cooked just like you would at home, if you had the time. The food is gently cooked to retain its drool-worthy texture and lock in all the nutrients of the high-quality ingredients whilst burning out any bad bacteria from the meat. Commonly, dry foods go through a process called ‘extrusion’. This means cooking at extremely high temperatures. This keeps costs down and means that no matter the quality of ingredients going into the food, the nutrients are torched out of them. The nature of fresh food is such that there are never any preservatives or nasty additives to bulk out the food. In fact, everything that goes into Butternut Box’s fresh meals is easily digestible and benefits the health of your dog. To us, fresh food delivers the most quality, nutrition, taste and tail wags.
Is this the same as cooking for my dog myself?
When we say ‘cooked like you would at home’, this isn’t necessarily the same as ‘home-cooked food’. Fresh dog food shares a lot of similarities with homemade food, such as quality ingredients you can buy at a supermarket, no artificial additives and cooking at low temperatures. Naturally however, as a subscription service aiming to deliver health and happiness to dogs everywhere, our meals are produced in larger amounts than if you were cooking for one dog, or a family of dogs, at home. That’s not to say we’d ever shirk on quality. We have a committed squad of dogs and humans who taste-test each recipe, and on all of our labels, you’ll only find ingredients you can see and say.

Isn’t life simpler when what you see is really what you get? Every ingredient that goes into our meals is on the label and identifiable. We carefully source all of our ingredients, and because we freeze our meals to lock in the goodness, there are never any nasty additives or preservatives. Legally, commercial dog food labelled ‘with chicken’ only needs to contain 4{fb151cea4b22b966e472b4793cf5efe9efc0a70a9ee179f9bf7a6facf9304492} chicken, the rest of the meal can be made up of all sorts of mystery meats. That’s just ruff.

Human-quality fresh food has all the essential nutrients for supporting growth and building immunity.
